Hello, livejournal! How is life going? I am trying to keep up with my resolution to be more communicative... which should involve posting at least once a week... so! Things!
-I know that in my last post I mentioned starting The Vineyard Man, and... uhhh... I already finished it? Like three days ago? BUT IT WAS SO GOOD. Okay, so I do love kdramas for all of their excessive cliches and overused tropes, but sometimes it is nice to take a break from genderswap/chaebols/etc. and just have a cute, simple, refreshing character piece. Also, it's basically just about a bunch of rednecks and old people so it made me homesick like whoa. But in a good way? I've adjusted to city life much more than I thought I would be able to, but b'awwww I miss living in the (sort of) country and getting stuck behind tractors on the way to work and eating fruit straight from the trees (my first year missing peak citrus season since I was in elementary school, boohoooooo). I even miss pulling weeds, and just having a patch of dirt to stick my hands into. Anyway, I am now more determined than ever to make a Korean countryside excursion as soon as it warms up a bit (so... like two months from now, fml. GO AWAY, WINTERRRR). ANYWAY. A++++ drama, would highly recommend even to those not fully indoctrinated into kdrama shenanigans (so far I think that makes only The Vineyard Man and Sungkyunkwan Scandal that I would place into that category. BUT GO FORTH AND WATCH!! I am determined to convert at least one person out of all y'all, gosh darn it).
-Okay, I guess this is just going to turn into a "b'awww homesick" post because, uhhh, other things that I am super mega missing right now -- MY SEWING MACHINE. Realistically speaking, I guess it doesn't make much sense to want one here because it's not like I have a ton of time to use it, but I just miss making stuff, and doing work that involves tangible production. Also, as usual, FFFFFFFFFF KOREA EVERY TIME I SEE THE WORDS "FREE SIZE" MY RAGE IS JUST INSTANT AND ALL-ENCOMPASSING, IT IS DOWNRIGHT PAVLOVIAN. Well, this has come about in kind of a round-about way, so let me back up for a moment.
Next month -- birthday month! Next month -- also Big Bang Big Show month! HMMMMM. Perhaps you can guess where this is headed. Yes, that's right, once again I am blowing my hard-earned money on a kpop concert, celebrating my continued journey into adulthood by rocking out like a tween girl. The timing is just too perfect, though! How could I say no? Anyway, last time I kind of wanted to dress the part but didn't really have time to pull anything together. This time I'm going with one of my friends from here in Daegu and we are both determined to come up with awesome outfits. I have already picked mine out! But, alas, NO SEWING MACHINE GODDAMMIT. Anyway, I have a super mega longing to go as the Alice in Wonderland girl from Seungri's new music video (whhhhyyyyyy is it that I'm always like, "lol Seungri you are so ridiculous/annoying/the little brother I want to punch in the mouth" and yet whenever his solos come out I'm like, "ummm just kidding this is totally my jam." STOP TROLLING ME, KPOP).
It'd be super easy to make, right? Mannnnn. Life sucks. So anyway, I was looking into maybe buying individual pieces... or, alternately, Teacher Friend and I were thinking about going as the black-and-white harlequin girls (with wigs??? Maybe???? ...Probably not). Doing some online window shopping for individual pieces, though, is like arrrrrrgggghhhhh WHY IS EVERYTHING FREE SIZE. I go through the measurements and it's like, hmmm, I guess the bust is okay... I guess the waist is okay... I guess the hips are -- wait -- the hips -- --- is that number for real -- WHY ARE THE HIPS SO MUCH SMALLER THAN THE BUST?? WHY IS EVERYTHING FREE SIZE WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY??????????
-Still working on Mockingjay. It's not quite gripping me in the way that Catching Fire did? I don't know, I'm only about a third of the way through, though.
-So... yeah... starting a new kdrama. Iljimae! It's like Korean Robin Hood! YESSSSSSS.

Date: 2011-01-26 05:23 am (UTC)I haven't sent you your cards yet because when you said you got copies of Catching Fire and Mockingjay I uhm, had to take the books back to the store. Because I'm slow and didn't send them in time. BUT I would like to get you something else. And you have a birthday coming up. Wishes? And do you ever wear earrings, or bracelets? It's all top secret, I assure you.
(oh, and Catching Fire >>>>> all the other books combined, but Mockingjay picks up more as you get through it. There's lots you'll learn about Finnick, in particular, that alone makes it worth finishing.)
I would love to see the awesome outfit! And no, of course you're not supposed to be an adult as you hit your birthday or rage into adulthood. And concerts are the best, so there.
(what is FREE SIZE btw, I'm confused???)
never thought of you as country, maybe more suburban, huh. that's so weird! Did you have animals (like a farm or ranch)?
as always, take care!

Free size is... like... one size fits all, basically? But when we use it in USA, it's for things like baseball hats and Disney World plastic rain ponchos and the like. Here, it's FUCKING EVERYTHING, from skirts to stockings to tailored jackets to cocktail dresses. Well, untrue, it's not everything -- you can buy sized clothing, but generally only at department stores which are hella expensive. The real downside to shopping here is that everything is either suuuuuuper cheap or suuuuuper expensive; there really isn't a good middle ground. Gosh and darn.

Haha, well, truthfully speaking I really am more suburban than country; I think it's just that, living in the city now, my life back home seems much more country in comparison. My family were farmers and grovers in my grandparents' generation, but there's not really much left to it any more. We still have some pastureland adjacent to our house but it's all rented out to other people who keep some cows/horses/chickens/goats. We grow enough fruit just for what we eat ourselves... maybe like fifteen citrus trees, and my dad has been futilely trying to coax a mango tree into fruition. So... I don't know what you really call that midpoint between country and suburban? Suburban enough to where we live on a street with stop signs and traffic lights, but country enough to where half my neighbors have pigs living in their backyards. IDK. It's all changing so fast, too, though -- I'm already sounding like my parents, but even just from my lifetime I remember when the lake that I lived on was circled by 20% houses and 80% orange groves, and yet now maybe ten years later it's all just houses. :/
