I just spent the last week doing a whole lot of nothing. Other than reading "The Count of Monte Cristo", I have accomplished a big pile of squat. It was, however, a very good book and definitely worth wasting a week on.

I was kind of appalled at how little the movie resembled the book (I had seen parts of it before, and then just rented it a few days ago), but I guess that was a good thing because I didn't have to worry about it spoiling the story for me. Honestly, for you guys that have to read it next year, don't even watch the movie for an interpretation of the book. It's a good movie, granted, but virtually nothing is the same. The basic setup is similar to what happens in the book, but after the first thirty minutes it isn't even recognizable as being based on the story. I was kind of disappointed that almost all of my favourite characters were left out. Eugenie and Haydee, the only cool female characters, are booted out. Benedetto is a complete wanker but amusing nonetheless, so I missed him. And, aw, Franz was out of the picture, too. Actually, I missed Franz a lot in the book. He's a major character all through Rome, and then as soon as the story moves to Paris he practically disappears. How sad, because he was the only one of the high ranking young men that wasn't a jerk. The rest of them were pretty funny, but he was the nice one. I liked the ending of the book a lot better than the movie, even though I think Valentine is a little too much of a Melanie Hamilton (well, I suppose it would be the other was around because "Gone With the Wind" came out after "The Count of Monte Cristo", but the comparison still applies).

Well, the point is, it's a good book and lucky you to my former classmates who get to read it next year. I will however warn you that it is a pretty long book, and while I managed to finish it in a reasonable amount of time you must also take into account the fact that I've had nothing else to do, whereas you will no doubt have a ton of other stuff going on during the school year. If you're remotely interested, I would probably advise you to go ahead and read it over the summer. That way you'll be able to know what's going on without having to go in-depth when school starts, and it's a very enjoyable book as well. I'm just disappointed that I don't have anything new to read...

...until the weekend after next, that is. I had a super freak out on the way to Brandon today when I realized how soon it is until OotP comes out. I'm waaaaay too excited for my own good, but I think after waiting three years I have the right to do so.
