OMG, first post about Battlestar Galactica in a thousand years! But it's a quickie.

NANA OMG I LOVE HERRRRR!!! And seriously it's very weird that I ended up watching tonight's episode, because I did tune in for the series premier but then decided not to pick up with the show again after all but then heard the news that Nana Visitor would be guest starring so then decided to at least remember to watch that episode. IMDb lists her appearance for "Sine Qua Non," which doesn't air for another three weeks. Tonight, though, I just had a sudden urge to watch it (possibly prompted by the fact that I fiiiinally finished watching every episode of TOS, which is both exciting but then also depressing because oh no time to find new scifi to obsess over), and, wait, whaaaat?? She was totally in this episode! Which I was not expecting at all! Lies, IMDb!!! Something deep inside must have called me to pick up that TV remote, however, because otherwise I would have missed it. So, BSG, you have finally earned a check in the plus column from me.

Can I just say...thank God, I'm not the only person on earth that DID try to watch BSG and just didn't fall MADLY in love with it??

Right back atcha! Man, I always feel like I kind of fail at scifi... television... life in general for just not feelin' this show. I started watching from day one because had all these residual warm fuzzies for Jamie Bamber from Hornblower and it really is a ballsy show and it gives off such a great aura of being groundbreaking television -- but after sticking through the first season, I didn't have much desire to keep up with it. And it's kind of weird because I can objectively recognize that it is probably one of the best shows on TV these days, that it's well acted and gorgeously shot, but I never could seem to bridge that emotional gap to actually caring about the characters. So I let it go for two seasons, but I've kind of starting flirting with it again this year, if only because the SciFi promos are really good, and I figure, what the hell, it's the last season and I kinda want to know how it all ends.

But anyway, woo, I'm glad to know it's not just me! I mean, I know I have a notoriously bad taste in everything, but even if I can sort of step back and say, "Yes, Show A is better made than Show B," that doesn't stop me from getting all flaily about Show B anyway. So, yeah, my scifi track record is kind of less than good -- I'm totally bonkers about DS9, the red-headed step-child of the Trek franchise; I always choose Kirk over Picard; when it comes to SciFi original series, I'd rather watch Stargate: Atlantis than Battlestar Galactica. But you know, I think it makes sense for me, in a way, at least in that I can see a bit of a pattern in there -- because in all of my extensive meta-ing of SGA lately, I feel like my love for that show is closely akin to my love for Robin Hood, that other oh-so-bad but oh-so-good brain-sucking fandom of mine. (And, yes, this is all a clever ploy to trick you into trying out SGA so I'll have other people to geek out with -- I mean, just watch John and Rodney being twelve-year-old boys (http://youtube.com/watch?v=1jU1T68Ow50) and tell me that it's not the greatest 24-second scene of your life XD XD)

I know! People always act like I'm brain-damaged since I don't watch it. But the truth is, I never connected to anyone on the show. So I'm in exactly the same boat as you. All it did was provide me with my second least favourite fictional character of all time: Lee "Apollo" Adama. It's incredibly well done, no doubts there. The scripts are solid. And yet...I couldn't care less about it if I tried.

But, on the same token, I'm hesitant to try rewatching it. I actually enjoy the distinction of being one of the few reasonably intelligent people on earth to just plain not like it.

Oh! My family LOVED DS9!! They did! They totally thought it was the best. But I'm sorry...Picard = Sex Bomb. I side with him. And actually, I totally watched SG1 for 8 seasons, and saw two or three episodes of SGA. But it was on at a really bad time for me, and I have so many other fandoms that took precedence over it. Poor SGA. But, erm, OMFG, Joe Flanigan = FREAKIN' GORGEOUS. Beyond. So, I'll give them that. ;)

I think I've sort of accepted that...I don't always care how GOOD a show is, I care how much I love it, and the rest of the world be damned. I love my fandoms, I love them as few others love them. And...that's that. I don't watch shows that don't interest me, just so that I can seem intelligent. ;)

Yeah, I feel bad because I started watching for Jamie Bamber, and I'm just like... Lee... *headdesk* Although my least favourite would have to be Roslin. She just fills me with neverending raaaaage... grarrrrghhhh... it's a quite frustrating viewing experience, to say the least.

YAY FOR YOUR FAMILY'S GOOD TASTE IN TREK SHOWS! :D My dad can't stand DS9 (reason why I'm watching it now instead of back when it was first on -- growing up, our house was strictly TNG/VOY only. How betrayed I feel!). I've only seen a few smatterings of SG-1 (heee your icon! XD), but think I'm eventually going to give into the temptation of Richard Dean Anderson's copious amounts of awesome.

And, yay, I'm glad you give some points to SGA, even if you don't have time for another fandom (I admire your self-restraint! Such was my attitude as well until I decided to watch the whole damn show in two weeks. ZOMG still not quite over that brain overload 0_o). And, hee, I'm actually watching Joe Flanigan interviews on YouTube right now (... I have a problem. I know), and I might just love him a little tiny bit beyond what is reasonable. Again to compare everything to Robin Hood, cause that's just how I roll, I kind of get the same sort of glee in watching him as I do with Richard Armitage, in terms of hearing them talk about acting choices with their characters. Because it's just like... everything I feel like I pick up with the character, or kind of speculate about in terms of, "Huh, I wonder if he would do so and so/felt this was about that/etc.," just -- when I listen to his interviews when he talks about what he tried to get across, it's like EXACTLY how I felt about the character. For instance! There are these two episodes that Joe co-wrote, and while they certainly had good parts I felt a little weird about certain aspects of them, and I was just watching this con session where he talks about the process of doing those episodes, and everything that he mentions being changed from how he saw it just perfectly matched up with what I was thinking. One of them is his backstory episode, which... ehhh... was not exactly how I envisioned his character before the show, and he brought that up as well and talked about his version of Sheppard's life and just sdk;jlasdf it was so perfectly how I felt (so why didn't it end up in the show, dammit??). And, well, compared to a lot of the other people on the show, he isn't always the most in-your-face with his performance so a lot of the greatness is the fact that it's sort of... I dunno... under the radar taken for granted? But then I seriously cannot stop watching this scene (http://youtube.com/watch?v=4goFd0Qjqi8) over and over because just those two words "I can't" kind of murder me with how amazing they are aaand again with the nonsensical flailing so I'll stop. But anyway. Yes, I certainly sympathize with the too-many-fandoms thing, but if you ever do want to give SGA a try, I would be more than delighted to give you some fandom Cliffs notes. :)

I think I've sort of accepted that...I don't always care how GOOD a show is, I care how much I love it, and the rest of the world be damned. I love my fandoms, I love them as few others love them. And...that's that. I don't watch shows that don't interest me, just so that I can seem intelligent. ;)

Um... a huge dose of WORD! Wonderfully stated, and I could not agree more.

I fail at TV - I tried so hard to catch up with BSG and then once I'd watched all up to Season 4 I just failed utterly to actually keep watching. I blame Lost.

Well, points for effort! I cheated -- Wikipedia episode summaries, ohhhh yeah. And aren't there only two more weeks left of Lost? Ack, time to start preparing for the withdrawal symptoms.

Okay, I'm caught up now, and despite this post had completely forgotten Nana was going to be in this episode...and completely failed to notice she WAS until the character was on the boat at the end. WHAT. I was sort of revising at the same time, but still. WHAT.

Haha, shaaame! *wags finger* Although to be fair, they did quite a nice job with the terminal patient make-up (and I know sometimes I have to do a double take at photos without the Bajoran nose ridges). I was actually curious enough after the episode to poke through some BSG communities, but I was a little disappointed by the (lack of) response to her role. I saw quite a lot of "Mary McDonnell! So good!" but the only Nana comment was along the lines of, "Well, I guess this proves that Trek actors aren't all bad when they're given decent material to work with." ...Whaaaat unfair. Aren't scifi fans supposed to stick together? (Ahahahahaaaaa okay who am I kidding but I think I let my wishful thinking get the better of me for a moment there.)

Um, what. At least DS9 had more emotional notes to its writing than WE ARE GOING TO DEPRESS YOU TO DEATH.
