Quick important question for Psych 4.01: Did the show just make a shoutout to The Middleman? Pierre referred to himself as "just the middleman" and then described his plan as being brilliant "in its simplicity." I... uhh... that could very easily be coincidence, but I want SO HARD to believe that it was intentional, so. As far as I'm concerned it was. In which case -- SHOW SHOW SHOW. EVERY TIME I THINK I COULDN'T LOVE YOU MORE, I DO.

(If I were a good fan I would do a better write-up but it's the middle of the night and I even ducked out of the RH capschat rewatch early because I honestly truly intended to go to bed early and yet somehow... have not. So anyway. I will sum up my feelings by C&Ping my comment from here: I love that, in under two minutes, at least half a dozen different ships are pandered to, haha. As a chronic multishipper, I find this very pleasing.... Shawn/Gus! Shawn/Jules! Shawn/Abigail! Shawn/Lassiter! Shawn/Raccoons! Lassiter/Jules!)

(ALSO. More actor recycling -- the hotel clerk from Psy vs. Psy, and the calculus teacher from If You're So Smart, Then Why Are You Dead? I don't know why exactly I have become so fixated on this show's guest stars but, well, there it is.)

(ALSO. UNFFFF opening credits with Lassiter from Lassie Did a Bad, Bad Thing. THIS IS RELEVANT TO MY INTERESTS.)

(ALSO. I was watching my S1 DVDs the other day and decided to finally check out the episode commentaries and, oh, my preexisting writerly crush on Andy Berman just jumped about ten levels within a forty minute period. 9 Lives is still such a shockingly perfect hour of television.)

HOW IS HE SO FABULOUS? I have to admit that I miss the longer hair, though.

The show actually referenced The Mentalist last season, first. During the football episode (I'm terrible with episode titles).

I'm leaning towards the "middleman" comment being unintentional, but awesome.

Bwahaha, yes, when Shawn was talking about watching The Mentalist with Henry, right? I love their shamelessness -- plus, I mean, it's all part of the cyclical nature of in-show references, where the whole show is built on references to other shows/movies and then when it is referenced/ripped off in another show then that in turn has to be re-referenced in the show itself. Wow, what an exhausting web we weave.

When Shawn first made the "you're just the middle man" remark I was kind of like heee Middleman! but didn't really think much of it, but to have it followed up with "my plan is pure elegance in its simplicity!" (okay, it wasn't exactly that verbatim, but... there was simplicity involved... okay, DVR to the rescue: "the genius of my plan is in its simplicity") kind of makes me feel that it could go either way... hmm. But, I mean, even if it wasn't intentional, I still find it a highly amusing overlap -- kind of like how right now I'm rewatching some Big Wolf on Campus where they travel back in time and Merton rediscovers his "1989 inspirational kitten calendar," featuring a poster of a kitty hanging onto a branch with the words "hangin' in there." Ummm... WHAT. Does that not bear a striking resemblance to the poster Shawn hangs for Gus in their office/supply closet in "9 Lives"? Again, utter coincidence, but... well... I don't believe in coincidences! Concurrent kitty jokes are evidence of some higher power guiding my television viewing decisions.
